Edublogs upgrade

Well, odds are you’ve noticed that Edublogs has just undergone a pretty radical upgrade – and that your admin area is looking a heap of a lot different!

In particular you’ll notice that the admin menu now goes down the side – rather than the top, and that everything has gone all drag ‘n drop pretty, but that’s not the all of it.

There’s also vastly improved uploading / media management, far better management tools for posts, pages, links, tags, categories and almost everything that can be managed!

And there are some plain excellent new features, like QuickPress – now featuring in your dashboard:

If you and your students need some assistance we’ve also been working like dogs to get the new Help & Support section up to date… it’s pretty much there but we’ll be adding new stuff to it as we go into the 2009 – 2010 academic year.

In particular you might like to share around our guide for Getting Started with Edublogs – it also comes with handy downloadable pdfs!

If you;re looking for someone to thank for them (or to complain about to if you hate them ;) the you’ll want to catch up with Sue Waters aka The Edublogger.

But that’s not all there is!

This year we’re going to be adding amazing new features, themes and plugins to Edublogs.org blogs and Edublogs Campus so now is the time to let us know of any extra features that you’d like to see.

As well as any bugs you might encounter with the new upgrade… but we’re hoping there are very few of them :)

Here’s to a great Edubloggin’ 2009 – 2010!

Simply create blogs and usernames for your students

Update: By popular demand we’ve also introduced an ‘Add Users’ feature that lets you easily add up to 15 users at one time to your blog (and they can all have different roles too!) Check out ‘Add Users’ under your ‘Users’ tab.

We’ve got a cracking new feature this week, one that we should’ve introduced ages ago and one that we think you’ll love!

Introducing…. the Blog and User Creator!

Blog and user creator

You can find this beautiful new feature in your ‘Users’ menu and what it does is simple.

It allows you to create, in batches of up to 15 at a time, blogs and usernames for your students and colleagues.

Give them a username, pop in their email address, choose a URL for them and decide if you want to also be admin of their blog (how neat is that, you can easily administer every student blog you set up… you can even change the student to ‘author’ or ‘contributor’ level!)

So now you don’t have to worry about your students all creating blogs, you can do it for them here.

Or if you want to introduce Edublogs to the other teachers in your school… just set them up an account using this tool.

And it even doesn’t matter if your students don’t have email addresses, because there’s a simple hack you can use with gmail.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, we’re pretty excited by this feature, and we’d love to get your feedback on it so please tell us what you think in the comments below.

***I’d love to be able to edit a themes / add something to the sidebar / tweak this template…

You can do… some templates allow you to extensively customise them thought the ‘template options’ or ‘current theme options’ section in ‘Presentation’

For example, try out the ‘Fauna’ template. You can also manipulate the ‘Links’ section of your blog to achieve a pretty impressive look ‘n feel, checkout the tutorials on the front page for how to do this.

***How do I add users to my blog?
If you want a collaborative blog or to just add users all you have to do is to ask them to create their own blog here and then use the ‘Add user from community’ option in Users: Authors & Users (the bonus is that they get their own blog too!)***How do I delete my blog?

Try to think of this as a bit like hotmail, you’re welcome to delete all your content and you can decide never to use your blog again but unless you’ve got a very good reason (i.e. you created it using your bank pin as an id) then we won’t specifically delete your blog (too much time / pain). Try not to worry about it…

***I want to blog from my phone / mobile device / using a third party tool… can I?

You certainly can by using xml-rpc which is fully integrated into edublogs.org. You just need to know your username and password and point whatever you’re using to blog to:

http://yourblogname.edublogs.org/wordpress/xmlrpc.php

***How do I set up this kind of thing for my school, organisation, community group etc.?

You can either run your own WPMU installation or get in touch with James Farmer (founder & owner of edublogs.org) who also happens to do blog consultancy and implementations of this kind of system at very reasonable rates!

Edublogs 1.0 – Special Announcement

Chalkface Project I’m delighted to announce that the next generation of edublogs.org, supported by The Chalkface Project, is officially launched today!

Firstly, the generous support of Chalkface means that edublogs.org (and associated sites) are now running on their own dedicated server. That means more bandwidth, more storage space, better performance and an all round superior edublogging experience. To celebrate I’ve increased every blogs upload space to 25MB (remember that you can make unlimited posts in addition to that.)

Second, not only are Chalkface supporting us financially but are also partnering with us to provide all edublog.org users with free access to their excellent online assessment tool, Yacapaca. Click on ‘Yacapaca’ in your menu bar to set up a free account and get playing!

And finally to celebrate the occasion I’ve installed a new design (one that shortly will be the subject of a logo / colour scheme competition!), please visit the edublogs.org homepage to check it out and let me know what you think / where it could improve.

So, with all that I’m kinda thinking that we’re pretty much out of beta now… so Monday, Feb 20th 2006 marks the beginning of edublogs 1.0 :)

One existing and some more upcoming features

Did you know that you can blog to edublogs.org using your phone, mobile device or third party application of your choice! All you need to do is to know your username and password and point it towards: http://yourblogid.edublogs.org/wordpress/xmlrpc.php (big thanks to Paulo on this one!)

Here are a few features that I want to get working in the very near future:

Google Analytics Stats – by the time google gets this working on an ongoing basis you’ll be able to get your stats through it. You will need a gmail account though so email jamesnfarmer@gmail.com if you don’t already have one and I’ll invite you.

Invites – I’m really keen to introduce the ‘invite’ function as while you don’t need an invite to use edublogs, there’s something special about getting one ‘aint there :)

Uploading documents – Currently upload is only for images, I’m gonna change this so that you can upload documents to your hearts content too!

Login from the front page – This one might be a bit more ambitious but I’d love for people to be able to login from this front page… it’s on the list!

As for editing themes I’m afraid that there doesn’t seem to be much on the horizon on that front.. although you can use the Links tool to insert images, javascripts and more into your sidebar… hopefully, down the line, sometime, this might happen.

In the meantime… what else would you like? Let me know!
