We’re soooo sorry!

face125125.jpgWe just can’t tell you how sorry we are for the slow loading times, errors and downtime over the last week.

Essentially what happened was that the growth of edublogs meant that we were getting drive errors on our servers, so we had to upgrade to SSCI disks (which allow for far more accesses) and purchase more servers to cope with the load… this was far more complex than we initially imagined and thus the difficulties over the week.

That’s just an explanation though as there aren’t really any excuses – you are entrusting us to look after your blogs and we should be able to provide you with fast and functional service. We can’t apologise enough for the inconvenience.

To make sure this doesn’t happen again we are investing in the highest specification servers available and hiring the best data technicians we can get to make sure every future maintenance goes as smoothly as is humanly possible.

We are always backing up all your data but we want to bring you far better speeds, we’re also going to be ramping up our upgrade schedule and providing you with a great deal of new features, themes, plugins and widgets over the coming weeks and months.

Can I personally thank everyone for the enormous amount of patience they have shown during this time, and assure you that we will do absolutely everything that we can to make up for the last week and repay your trust in us.

If you do have any continuing issues please don’t hesitate to post them in the forums (you need to register separately there) or email us directly at support /at/ edublogs dot/ org.

Upload upgrade this weekend (11-12 Nov)

I’m having really relaxing weekends these days :)

This weekend we’re upgrading the uploading function, unfortunately this won’t give you any more functionality but it will allow for the site to continue growing without all your uploads breaking.

So there’s a good chance that files that you’ve previously uploaded will disappear for a time… but thay’ll be back… promise!

Also laying off the uploads for the weekend is probably a good idea – although they should still work.

edublogs.org provides free, fully functional WordPress blogs hosted on our dedicated top-of-the range server. With these you can create individual posts in a traditional blog-style, pages of static content indexed in your sidebar and select from any number of themes to give life to your new blog.

wpex3.gif In addition to this you can upload up to 25MB of images, audio, documents, powerpoints or other digital material you want to share. Posting these is as simple as dragging and dropping them to your posting window.

And of course you can link to or bring in any larger audio or image files that you uplaod anywhere else on the web, such as ourmedia.org – so you can have that 20 MB podcast up and running in no time :)
wpex4.gifThematically you’ve got an awful lot of choices too. Currently we offer over 60 different (and rather cool) themes at edublogs.org and we’re adding more all the time. What’s more, many of these themes will allow you to edit the header, decide which pieces of content you want in your sidebar and generally rock your world.

And that’s not all, there’s a comprehensive (the most comprehensive) link manager, complete control over comments, choices about the number of posts to display on your front page and in your feed, profiles, plugins to fix you up with tools like Google Analytics to get your web stats, multi-user and group blogging simply done through the use of the ‘Users’ area and plenty plenty more besides!

So what are you waiting for, create your new edublog now and get posting!

One existing and some more upcoming features

Did you know that you can blog to edublogs.org using your phone, mobile device or third party application of your choice! All you need to do is to know your username and password and point it towards: http://yourblogid.edublogs.org/wordpress/xmlrpc.php (big thanks to Paulo on this one!)

Here are a few features that I want to get working in the very near future:

Google Analytics Stats – by the time google gets this working on an ongoing basis you’ll be able to get your stats through it. You will need a gmail account though so email jamesnfarmer@gmail.com if you don’t already have one and I’ll invite you.

Invites – I’m really keen to introduce the ‘invite’ function as while you don’t need an invite to use edublogs, there’s something special about getting one ‘aint there :)

Uploading documents – Currently upload is only for images, I’m gonna change this so that you can upload documents to your hearts content too!

Login from the front page – This one might be a bit more ambitious but I’d love for people to be able to login from this front page… it’s on the list!

As for editing themes I’m afraid that there doesn’t seem to be much on the horizon on that front.. although you can use the Links tool to insert images, javascripts and more into your sidebar… hopefully, down the line, sometime, this might happen.

In the meantime… what else would you like? Let me know!

Problems logging in

We had a little stuff up with some user IDs overnight (blame me!) so some people might be having a little trouble logging in… if you do please try the following:

1. Use the ‘forgot your password?’ function at /wp-login.php and see if that works
2. If it doesn’t please contact me with your site address and username and I’ll fix it manually

-if you’re dealing with multiple users please email me all their details and I’ll fix that too-

Update: *with the weekend – and next round of home renovations – approaching I may not be able to get back to you that quickly on these… will try to check in each day to fix up stuff though*

Provide some details for your blog
No stress, you can always change this later on.
