*All New* edublogs.org forums!

This is a soft launch (will email everyone later) of the all new edublogs.org forums.

As some of you may remember I experimented with a forums area using Drupal a while back but it didn’t have any real impact so this time there’s a few serious improvements.

It’s using the excellent bbPress (thanks Matt :) which is not just great forum software but is also integrated with the edublogs.org database so that all you have to do to sign in is to use your regular edublogs.org username and password. We might even be able to do this with cookies down the line so you’re auto-logged in but I’m pretty happy with it so far!

Here’s the RSS feed to keep up with what’s going down.

So do go over, make some requests, share some bugs, tell people about your great edublogs… the floor is yours!

How do you post a podcast with edublogs.org?

An edublogs.org user that I’m particularly happy to have is my dad who today, asks a very simple question “How do I podcast”? Good question… unfortunately whoever he spoke to did not give him a good answer though so, drumroll, here’s how you podcast using edublogs.org:

  1. Record and create an .mp3 file (Audacity is free and good for this)
  2. Upload your mp3 using the ‘Upload’ tool in your posting window.
  3. Drag and drop it to your posting window
  4. Write some stuff and click ‘Publish’

Not that hard eh!

Now all anyone who wants to subscribe to your podcast needs to do is to subscribe to your URL, i.e. username.edublogs.org

Technical notes (feel free to ignore): WordPress automatically converts the .mp3 file into an enclosure in your RSS feed consequently meaning that if you’re subscribed to it using a podcast aggregator it will automatically download the full ..mp3 onto your hard drive / music device
[NB: At the moment there’s a 25MB limit on upload space so you’ll probably only be able to fit 5 or 6 podcasts there for the moment, however, if you use OurMedia.org you can set yourself up with infinite bandwidth and storage]

Supporting edublogs.org

It’s pretty much at the end of each month… when the bandwidth limits are drawing near… that the only downside of running edublogs.org kicks in.

Essentially we’re going to need a dedicated server very very soon as in the first place we’re running out of bandwidth / space and in the second I figure we’ll all be happier with better performance (especially around backups). The problem is, however, that it costs. And when you’re sustaining yourself of a lecturers salary with a new mortgage, well, you know how it can be.

But I’m fundamentally against putting any advertising on blogs. Down the line I’d like to leave that option up to you (i.e. advertise if you want to & for yourself) but I certainly don’t want to slap ads on any edublogs.

So, it’s going to have to be sponsorship & partnership. Here’s the deal…

  • Plain old simple advertising as a ‘supporter’ on edublogs.org
  • Inclusion (and write up) in the edublogs.org newsletter
  • Inclusion in the ‘backend’ of each blog (this can be done in a number of ways)
  • Partnership in offering edublogs.org users tools and services

And if you’d like or anyone can suggest other approaches / arrangements please leave a comment or contact me.

We can negotiate arrangements for 3, 6 & 12 months. If you’re interested or know anyone who might be interested please get in touch or let them know!

[Oh and for January so far we’re dealing in 32,665 uniques & 1,113,482 pages… and rapidly growing!!! Getting a 12 month agreement in now could be an enormous marketing bargain!!!]

New look edublogs homepage & how to get your own themes at edublogs.org

Was getting very very tired of the old orange lines and stuff so knocked this together in double quick time the other day.

Nothing special, just aesthetics (um, to a degree), how do ya find it?

Also, have discovered a way you can have your own theme while editableness isn’t going… basically you’ll have to edit an existing wordpress theme, email it to me and I’ll install it just for you. I figure I should probably charge a nominal amount for this down the line (more to dissuade everyone from asking me rather than making any money!) but for the timebeing I’ll do it for free – james /at/ edublogs /dot/ org
