Slow loading

Definitely weird because I guessed that was the blog and when I checked it yesterday it is loading fast in both Flock and Internet Explorer. As you say very clean looking blog Dr Mike with none of the obvious reasons for slow loading.

So it makes me wonder if there is something running on their computers that is causing the problem. Can you find out what web browser they are using? Perhaps they are using a Mac and Safari? Or maybe they have some sort of filter in place to stop their children accessing particular sites and that is causing an issue. Also worth checking what antivirus software they are running. What else Dr Mike could they check?

I'm assuming that folks are trying to view this from their homes and not in a school lab since you mention parents. If that's correct, it wouldn't be the ISP unless everybody is on the same network like if it was run by the local government. The virus protection also comes to mind but again if it;s different folks, not everybody will have had that problem. (At least I hope not.)

I note that the poster is coming in from a school IP address. Folks have seen problems previously is they're all coming in from a lab together. If there's a firewall in place, it'll think all of the connections going to a single site is an attack and it'll usually try to prevent it.

A number of other things come to mind but they're all ruled out if folks are trying to access the site from different connections.

You don;t have any sort of ISP run by the town, do you? I know some communities put out their own town covering wireless or cable companies. That's really the only thing I can think of.

Thank you both for your help. I will check with the parent of one child that I know well. This has happened with more than one student, so I know there is some sort of an issue. One actually reported that it froze up their computer, and they had to restart the computer. I'll let you know what I find out. Also, no we don't have city-wide wireless yet.

I'm really at a loss then. I'm not seeing anything that would normally be causing an issue. Even if they were over dialup, I don't see any problems.

Can you get them to confirm exactly what web browser they are using, including version number plus if they have any anti-virus and what version?

Here is what one parent emailed me:

"The web browser we use is Internet Explorer (we have Comcast).

There is a computer restriction on my computer but only selected at medium.

The antivirus software we use is avast."

I took a poll in one class to see who had had trouble with the blog. At least 6 hands flew up. They reported getting error messages when trying to access the blog. Here are some that they remembered:

"file is dormant"
"page is not responding"

One student reported problems when trying to scroll down to see all the responses - it wouldn't scroll.

If you turn off Web Shield, how does the site respond?

I didn't ask her to turn off avast. The parent was pretty fed up with the blog as were many students who had tried to post on several different occasions from home and at school. As a teacher I cannot dictate how the parents set up their firewall, or what antivirus software they use.

My students were assigned to post responses on the blog as homework grades. They even had trouble getting into the blog from the computer lab at school. I tried to get on the blog from a lab computer and it said "page not available."

Blog issues can't be this difficult or fraught with this many issues to be worth my time because there are so many other tasks associated with my job that are extremely time consuming. Blogging is a "nice to have" element but not an essential element.

I am experiencing similar problems to the above with 'freezing' blogs every time we load them. I had three blogs set up for an international blogging research project but I am afraid two of them keep freezing - could you please check if there is anything in the settings that might be causing problems?

I do not seem to have any problems when I am logged in, however we are finding that whenever students try to use, they freeze.
Thanks, Margo

Hi Margo, I assume they are freezing in Internet Explorer. Can I get you to try changing themes as I'm sure it is that theme is the most likely cause?

Yes, they are feezing in IE.
Can you make a suggestion of a theme that would work better? Margo

Hi Margo, it is just that theme that I know of. You can test with Cutline or Edublogs Default.

Actually I see a couple of issues (at least one missing div) but the CAPS that James uses in the kontera script is throwing things off when I try to send the pages through a validator. Can we bug him about that again please?
