Slow loading

I love edublogs and I would really like to use it. However, I have experienced extremely slow loading. I have considered many possible issues...

1. My internet service; however, all other websites load at great speed including wordpress.com.

2. My theme. I changed that and it takes a long time to load.

3. My uploads. I only have one picture.

4. I started to use wordpress which loads much faster; however, my school's firewall will not allow access to wordpress.

Is anyone else having this problem? Please tell me what I can do (if anything) to improve the loading.

Let me clarify, when I say slow loading I mean every time I click a link to view or edit within edublogs. When I used wordpress or any other blog site I do not experience such slow loading.

Answers from fellow members and edublogs support

I too am having a lot of problems with the site being slow. I have found it slow just navigating on the Edublogs site...not just with my own blog. My other websites and web navigating is not slow at all.

Link to the blogs in question?

I can't say that I personally am experiencing this. It's fairly responsive for me, but there could be several reasons affecting your situation. I mean, it isn't instant, but I wouldn't call it slow. Maybe 3-5 seconds for a page load, 10 at its worst.

I've heard rumors that there are some network capability expansions which will be coming online in the coming weeks, but have not heard of any confirmed dates. Not saying that it's a problem, or that it relates to your situation, but I thought I would throw that out there.

The last topic on this was a theme issue, which is being resolved, but without a link to your specific blog it's tough to check.

My blog is meeuwse.edublogs.org
and my settings say I've only used .82mb of space. It hasn't always been this slow to respond...it seems like just today it's slow and it is taking over 20 seconds to navigate through any changes on the site.

Quite strange. Maybe Edublogs got super duper popular all of a sudden? :D

I did load you blog, and it was a bit slow. Can you check my test/dev blog @ luke.edublogs.org and see how that loads for you?

Edit:
I do notice in the source it's reporting 156 queries database queries, and taking 23.069 seconds.

Could be a number of things, but that would point to an area to be looked into. Might take a few to look though.

when I put your link as listed above in my url window it comes up and says it does not match any documents. If I try just luke.edublogs.org a page comes right up (don't know if it's yours or not)

Yes, luke.edublogs.org would be correct.

Thus far, it looks like (for whatever reason) your site is hitting the database pretty hard. Even with that many queries, it shouldn't take even near that long.

To try and help isolate the problem, could you possibly switch your theme to Chaotic Soul for a minute? I'd like to do a comparison.

Ok...I changed the theme.

Thanks, you can change it back. :)

Unfortunately, nothing sticks out. Going to take a little deeper digging into. Soon as something is tracked down, we'll let you know.

ok thanks!

The problem's been dug about as far as it can go.

It's been pinned down to an increased traffic load (most likely from a seminar or a high influx of new users, from a new class starting or something).

It should hopefully settle back down to normal in a while. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about it at the moment, so some areas may experience a slight delay in normal load times.

However, another web node is in planning to be brought online in the coming weeks, which will help in situations like these. It seems that it's been of an increasing frequency recently, but such is the occasional pain of growing. Needless to say, ol' Andrew is on top of the controls, and working to make it as bearable as possible.

Thanks for checking and getting back to me!

Sorry I suppose I should have put the link to the blog. Haha laugh at the newb.

I have tried the whole theme thing. It is not just slow loading my blog as it is editing like the above person mentioned.
I read what you said to help meeuwse can you check mine out and see what you think why mine may be running so slow

I apologize I did not read everything you wrote until just now. Ignore my last post. I will wait and see if it speeds up. Thanks for your help.

I don't see any problems with slbowden.edublogs.org. Loaded fine from here on a crappy wireless connection in about 2 seconds in Firefox 3.0.0.1. I did fix the link up there since it directed to an offsite squatter though.

meeuwse's concern is her theme's header image and it's size. This has been discussed in her other thread.

Tonight's link to check your own blog for issues: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/index.html Very much bookmarked by me. :)

Yep, everything has pretty much settled down from earlier today.

It was pretty heavy, consistent traffic there for a while.

@doc, unfortunately you've gotten your users confused. Wrong theme, user, and header. :)

But it's all getting back to normal now.

Wow, Dr. Mike! Please read the forums more carefully and respond in a more positive way.
Thank you, Luke, for all your help.

By the way, everything not just my blog is loading more quickly. Thanks!

You're welcome.

Like I had said, it's just one of those things that happens to everyone on occasion. It's pretty tough to control who browses a site. :)

Please read the forums more carefully and respond in a more positive way.

And thank you for the insult. So glad I took the time to at least try to help you.

It wasn't my intention to insult you Dr. Mike. I apologize. I felt that you didn't read my forum completely and stated the obvious (e.g. my blog loading quickly on a "crappy" wireless connection). It seemed that you didn't provide much help to my issue more that you were trying to say I was obviously wrong because "just the site" loaded fine for you. I apologize for reading into that incorrectly. I appreciate you fixing the link.
Again, no insult was intended. I apologize.

yeah i cant even load to post on my blog at all. i need to for a physics class but nothing loads after i log in.

@Jaxon9 Can you please tell me your blog URL so I can check it?

Have finally gotten educators at our school interested. The service was working fine for us until last week, when loads became VERY slow, and often times students could not log in (error pages). I'm frustrated. We host 3 blogs from this login. If our teacher's can't play with the program here, how can we be expected to make a commitment to a paid subscription? Someone has suggested that the paid subscription might work better. Is this the case?

I'm sorry our apologies -- we can totally understand the problems this would have caused you. It was an issue at our end that we have been working on and you should find that connection speeds are fine again.

Haven't seen any errors recently. Looking good. :)

My students have been experiencing problems accessing my blog last week and this week too. I posted a question that they had to respond to for a homework grade. Several parents have emailed me saying that the page doesn't load. It is causing many problems. I was trying the site out here at the end of the school year thinking that if it was successful I would pay for a subscription for next school year. Right now I'm not sure it is worth it. Has this been a common problem lately?

I haven't noticed anything lately.

It would be helpful please if you gave a link to the specific blog in question as well as the Post in question. You have an email address in where folks normally put their website address so I really can't even make a guess on this one.

edit: I'm switching locations here in a bit. It may be an hour or two before I can get back to you.

Connection speeds on all Edublogs blogs have been excellent for weeks. Can you give us the blog URL so we can check it out because maybe there is something on the blog causing issues.

Here is the URL for my blog:

http://lynnhollister.edublogs.org/

Another parent emailed me last night saying they couldn't access the blog either without it freezing their computer each time they tried. I would love to know if I have done something wrong in setting it up that is causing the problem. Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the link.

I can't dupe this in Firefox but it does take a few seconds to load in IE. Brueeger's isn't known for their web connection speeds though.

Page size is only 64k which is very small.

The webpage analyzer we use doesn't report anything abnormal outside of the size of one of the scripts but all of the blogs have that script running.

I tried one of your Posts (the people of sparks one) and outside of the number of images (all those gravatars) I didn't see any problems and the analyzier didn't complain either.

I'm at a loss.

We're they looking at a specific post when they had the issue? I flipped through the newer ones but didn't see any problems.

Normally we can point at something specific and say that's the problem but all the normal things I see aren't occurring here. No embeds, no sidebars filled with every thing the blog admin can find.

It's actually a very clean and clear blog.
