Replacing Anarchy Media Player

Hiya,

As you can now directly paste video (and flash) embed codes into your blogs, we don't need to use Anarchy Media player (the yellow A button and silver Flash) anymore.

Which is actually quite a good thing as it's not being actively developed any more and really slows down page loads.

So, what we're doing is removing the A and F buttons and chnaging the instructions for 'Videos' to read:

"To embed a video simply:

* Copy the embed code of the video, for example with YouTube it usually starts: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" etc...

* Click on your 'Code' tab and paste the code where you want the video to sit

You can also upload videos, up to a size of 20MB, directly to your blog."

The main negative of this will be that embedded videos that used the A button will need to be embedded again using the new method :(

However, the additional speed and performance that you'll get out of your blog will hopefully make this more than worthwhile.

Please let us know your thoughts, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Cheers, James

What is the "grace period?" My old embedded videos are working now, but I assume that is only temporary.

Actually, James, it does not work so well. Look what it did to my blog (using Firefox, which NEVER causes any problems): http://globalsociology.edublogs.org/... it's the post at the top and it messes up the whole thing.

Thanks

Christine

I'd guess the grace period would be 2-4 weeks but we're looking into a way that we can just replace the code.

The problem with YT embedding at the moment is that when you edit a post and re-save it then you get the problem you've got (you;rve got to repost it again) - this will get fixed up before we remove AMP.

This thread raises a good point. What about locally hosted embeds?

I'm not finding that your copy embed code and paste in the code portion is working. Trying it in firefox made a mess of my page (2 posts running side by side instead of under each other, etc)

waldner.edublogs.org (today's B10 post top of blog) won't show the video.

Ideas?
Was there any forewarning of this change before it happened so I could have forewarned my students to not panick? It would have been helpful.

Marcy

That's a bug that we're going to fix soon.

And the change hasn't actually happened, so this is forewarning :)

I re-did all of my old embeds and everything is working fine. Had to re-size a slideshow, but that was easy. Thanks...my students were complaining of the load time, so hopefully this will be an improvement.

As an update, we're hoping that you won't have to re-paste YouTube or Google Video, we're working on a fix for that.

When I try to imbed video (avi) created with smartboard software, in a post, no link is created, and I don't get a "send to editor" box to click. I am using Internet explorer 7. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Do you upload the video?

If so, how large is the file?

If it's code you're trying to embed, what is it?

I also have an issue with embedding video content into my blogs (Firefox). When i embedded / pasted the url (mostly youtube clips) into my blog before the text always came up in the 'Visual' tab as well as the 'Code' tab. Now i cant see any text in the 'Visual ' tab and am finding it difficult to know where to continue inserting text etc...When i go to view the new blog the clips are always left aligned to the very edge of the blog. It all looks a bit dodgy. I haven't saved any clips to my blogs since things changed.
Cant we have just have the A button back?

Sorry, removing the A bottin = 25% speed increase for all blogs so it's not coming back :/

All you need to do now is to paste the embed code.

And when we upgrade (hopefully this month) there shoudl be a new url option.

yeah but what about in the mean time...i know all i need to do is cut and paste the embed code but why cant i see the code in the Visual tab anymore? and why is it left aligned? how can i get around this?

There shouldn't be any change in alignment and I'm afraid you'll just have to manage with not seeing the code for a bit :/

so this is acceptable....

http://coburgmaths10.edublogs.org/2008/04/30/testing-the-video-embed/

how do you post clips on your blogs?

That's not aligning left, that's just you breaking the theme by Save & Continuing the post with a YT embed in it.

Just recopy and paste the embed code and it'll be just fine.

This will be fixed with teh upgrade.

James, I hate to say it but I have to admit that I see removing the the player as a bad idea. Leaving it in as an optional plugin may be something you may want to think about.

Ack
I don't like not having the embedded audio flash player come up when I have links to MP3 files. That was one thing that made my Edublog experience special, to be honest.
Is there some embeddable code or widget out there I can use in my posts for having a flash player for audio/podcasting?
Kevin

I'm afraid it's just too resource intensive. We've seen a significant improvement across the entire system since removing the plugin (as James mentioned above).

Thanks,
Andrew

Agreed but you're getting thread after thread with folks who 1) didn't see the announcement and 2) are going to have to go back through and redo all of their videos.

edit: Well that one and the other flash plugin that appears to have been removed.

The video issue is a TinyMCE bug which will be fixed with 1.5 - so it's dead annoying but *hopefully* we'll get an RC2 or final that we can work on asap which will manage that.

As for an optional plugin for mp3 / wuicktime players that's not a bad idea at all, we'll take a look at it.

And also how we could use shortcodes for this n a less resource intensive way.

So we'll gt an .mp3 player back for you Kevin :)

Great
Thanks
I sure do miss the flash player, but I understand the need for the changes to improve speed and load time.
Kevin

My problems are these:

1. Now that I have to copy the "standard" embed code from TeacherTube I have to edit it each time to prevent it from linking back to the TeacherTube website after two clicks. I have to do this because impatient students can't wait 2 seconds for things to load so they try clicking again only to have their browser sent off to another page. If removing the flash player speeds things up then I have no problem with doing these edits, but it was nice not having to worry about it.

2. The other problem I have had today was that after re-embeding the video using the new code it stopped loading in at all, so I couldn't watch the video, even if I replaced the code exactly from TeacherTube without my edits. Does anyone know if this is a TC issue?

Thanks.

I'm really disappointed about this. I really love your service, and I use our school's blog to show off our children's ICT work... making videos, stop-motion animations, audio etc. I now have to go through 118 posts, updating links to the children's files. This is going to take a considerable amount of time, so in the meantime, the children's work has all disappeared from view.

:-(

@mhamlet Sorry, not much we can do with teachertube :( Sounds like their issue to me.

@thedowns We're uploading a fix for .mov videos now (as we've said we will be doing) so please don't be too disappointed.
