Wanna try out the new Clustrmaps widget?

You get to know about stuff first here art the forums :)

Would you like to try out the new Clustrmaps widget? Go for it... it's under Presentation > Widgets and we'd love to get your feedback.

Answers from fellow members and edublogs support

Thanks for this James...
the ClustrMaps Team will be happy to beam in to provide any further comments/advice if needed... shouldn't be necessary, but you never know... I'm not sure if your members who don't already know can tell 'at a glance' that ClustrMaps is a geographical hit counter, but we'll make sure prior to 'bigger launch' that it gets properly labelled and described!!

doesnt work on my blog .. keeps saying unsucessful registration, URL not registered. I did go to the Clustr Map site and also register the URL, got an email, and even changed my password, but every time I go back to the widgets page it keeps repeating unsuccessful registration .. http://franksblog.edublogs.org

Perhaps the ClustrMap page does not record or update the registration in their database immediately?

I got the same errors and I'm already registered. I suspect the problem is that edublogs isn't registered so the sub-domain of each blog is also not registered for the widget. As a blogroll link, Clustrmaps works just fine.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for being guinea pigs :) Did you configure the widget?

Yes. That's the only way to get the errors.

Ah... I believe that (for franksblog and cerebraloddjobs) the problem is an un-trapped anomaly, as follows: for those ALREADY registered (via the old/manual/original method), freshly deploying the 'new'/drag-and-drop-widget method leads to that particular error... I note in both cases that there are already fully-working world maps, so both have been registered correctly (some time ago), and you can get the map widget just by pasting the original HTML back in your sidebar like before. Of course, you shouldn't have to do this, and the new widget method should work too: thanks for spotting this anomaly... we'll dig into this right away.

Naturally, as early-bug-spotters, you've earned yourselves a free upgrade to ClustrMaps+ (better zoomed-in-continent maps, no ads), which will 'kick in' as soon as the next map updates are run... you'll need to be sure the HTML is there in your sidebar for the counter to keep counting, though!

What then is the difference between the regular way of doing Clustrmaps and the widgeted way?

Thanks for upgrade. Should be fun.

Nice one, cerebraloddjobs ;-)
Here's the main difference, primarily for brand new signups:

Old (regular) way: to get a thumbnail map on your blog, you need to
1. go to the ClustrMaps Get one! page
2. link from there to the registration page
3. fill in your URL and email
4. submit
5. check your email for your fresh password
6. go to the Admin page
7. sign in with URL and fresh password
8. copy the HTML
9. edit your blog sidebar by dragging a text widget (or similar)
10. paste the HTML you copied at step 8.

Widgeted (new) way:
1. edit your blog sidebar by dragging the ClustrMaps widget [similar to 9 above]
2. open the widget's options to fill in your email - the URL is already there, and save it

That's it... the no-brainer simplicity of true widgets... we only ask for the email address so that we can provide personalised user support in case of questions or difficulties, and also to allow a route for people to go in their Admin pages on ClustrMaps.com and edit some of the options if they want (more will be coming soon, like customised look), and to upgrade to ClustrMaps+

So, the principle of widgetization is to keep it much simpler... admittedly WordPress can still be tricky for many beginners, and there are even simpler widget-adding methods available... but we're working on it!

Some day cerebraloddjobs will make a great mother/father in law. :)

Hi all - those 'anomalies' mentioned above (already-registered users using the old manual method got a false error message when trying to use the new easy widget method) have now been resolved... so the widget should now be fine for all edublogs users. We'll keep monitoring the forums in case of any further clarifications are needed - enjoy!
