Christmas comes early at edublogs this year, partly because the day itself isn’t much known for teaching and learning ;), partly because we want to give the team a break… and partly because we just wanna spread some cheer!
So, as of today you should have, available in your edublog:
- A snazzy new editor option (click it to get more editing options :)
- Tags for every post (and also on every theme!) – tag clouds for your sidebars etc. all coming soon
- Ten swanky new themes to choose from (two of which are pictured below)
-
Unfortunately there are a few hiccoughs associated with the gift (sorry) which include:
- Themes switching back to the defaults one (FIX: just go back into ‘Presentation’ and choose the original theme)
- /s appearing in your titles and taglines (FIX: Just edit them out under ‘Options’)
Sorry for the bother with these, with one hand we giveth and with the other we annoyeth!
But most importantly, have a happy Christmas and new year from all of us here at edublogs, and we can’t wait to bring you even more goodies in 2008!

How about some winter or christmas themes for our blogs ;)

I would like to see themes that would appeal to elementary aged students.

Love the changes. The little quirks are not a big deal! Thanks so much!

My blogroll disappeared after the update. I still have all of my blogroll links, and “links” is still a widget in my presentation, but the blogroll doesn’t appear anymore. What can I do?
December 18, 2007 at 1:56 am Permalink
I solved my own problem. I selected a new theme, viewed my site, and then changed back to my original theme. When I viewed my site again, my blogroll had reappeared. I’m not sure why, but as long as my blogroll is there, I’m a happy camper:-)

Thanks for the updates, however, I did what you said to do — went back and changed to my original presentatio — but it did not work. What do I need to do (pronto!) to change this? I have students who are expecting to blog. Thanks a ton!
December 18, 2007 at 5:35 am Permalink
I can deal with the pages reverting back to original presentation but what about all of the additional pages disappearing? Will we get them back? There are about 50 plus people in my district using edublogs are quite upset!!!
December 18, 2007 at 6:32 am Permalink
Coming back after a while . . . . nice to have new stuff.
December 18, 2007 at 7:03 am Permalink
Glad to spread some cheer :)
Cheryl (and others) if you have some bugs can you firstly provide detail (for example – URL, pages that have disappeared etc.) and if it’s in detail please report it on the forums: http://edublogs.org/forums/ so we can have a good natter.

I had several students who were posting a synthesis essay last night when they said the system reset and they lost their post. One student printed out the screen that showed up (it was just the normal Edublogs screen that says we’re down for maintainence or upgrades). That was a problem. That said, I’ve never had a problem myself, but it was a bit of a scare for my students and I ended up giving an extra day on the assignment.
PS I love the new themes and, as a new user to the site, I love what this blog allows me to do over our district-provided Microsoft Sharepoint system.

I installed this last week. Today, my computer shut down and wiped out my Microsoft stuff that I had pulled up (got a blue screen). Not sure these 2 were related, but the timing is incredible.

Why is the Vistered Little theme not working properly? It’s not all colorful like it should be … or at least it isn’t on my computer.

What do I do if I just get this when I try and view my site:

Thanks for the new themes. I am new to the blog scene, but I think there are some great options here!

I cant get to my site and I am about to rollout to my students, I get this message, but I cant find anything in the support about it, is this something to do with the new themes? Help, I cant believe all my work is now unusable.
Can’t select database
We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the edublogs_750 database.
Are you sure it exists?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?
If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

Giddings – Your students have no excuses… each post is autosaved every few minutes and will be in their drafts :)
Diane – you can’t install edublogs – it works on a web browser so your windows problems will be unrelated.
Mrspaul – We’re working on a fix for Vistered Little… sorry about that!
thearthurgroup – All your work, and eveyone elses is still there and very usable, please don’t panic. It was a minor theme issue which we’re working on now, please just select a different theme.

I was using the Freshy theme and now it’s gone. I spent many hours customizing the theme to work for me, I use the blog as a tool for my students, and now I don’t have anything like it.
Will this theme be brought back anytime soon?
December 18, 2007 at 9:40 am Permalink
HELP! My old theme is still not coming back. In fact, there is no theme that will apply to my blog. It says new theme applied, but when I view, it stays the same. I tried to go onto Forums as directed, however, it tells me my username does not exist. But, I know I exist; I checked. Ugh! Please help.

I am now experiencing some glitches with my blog: http://rm22.edublogs.org. When I go to the site, essentially I could get one of two different blogs now- same address but different presentation styles, different comments in moderation, different posts, different pages. I most recently had added seven new book review pages that students had commented on. None of the comments are ever showing up on the pages even though they have been approved and are sometimes showing up in the site admin. Please advise.

Hey, thanks for the paste from Word option. That’s great for my students, since I often assign numbers of words for minimum length on articles, and their copy/paste tactics format everything weird.
December 19, 2007 at 7:03 am Permalink
For vistered little there is no longer a list of categories in my side bar. Is this permanent, and is there a way to change it?
Thanks!

Presentation > Widgets allows you to completely configure your sidebar at will!

Sorry to appear Scrooge-like, but this has not been helpful. The additions might useful, but the problems are a major hassle, especially at a busy time of year. You need to give more notice (4 hours is not enough) so that we can make a note of the settings in case of any glitches. What with the very slow response times on the site, I’m not happy.
December 20, 2007 at 5:13 am Permalink
Next time you decide to make major changes that will cause us to lose our custom header image (among other things), please try to let us know in advance. I’ll echo the commenter above in saying that this latest hassle, combined with the very slow response times on edublogs, has been a serious inconvenience. We are now looking into migrating our blog to a different host.
December 20, 2007 at 6:15 am Permalink
Sorry to hear that guys, the problems that occurred were only for a 24 hour period and were relatively minor, for example auto cropping an image takes all of 15 seconds.
As for response times, not sure what you’re referring to there as our response times, with the new set up, are pretty damn quick even if I do say so myself :)
Still, you can’t please everyone all of the time so we wish you more luck with your next free blog host.
December 20, 2007 at 6:23 am Permalink
Thanks for the updates. A few issues straight after the change but they ALL sorted themselves out after following any instructions that appeared and not panicing. A fine update from a free service. Nothing more should be expected. Thank you James.

Hey – also – I’ve just realised Christmas is going to be early for me on the edublogs forum!

Love the themes!! Got a questions, how do I post pictures via Flickr? Students are so excited about their new blog site, thanks!
ms.nance1@verizon.net
December 21, 2007 at 3:40 am Permalink
msnance – did you get an answer via email? Are you wanting to post a Flickr picture actually into a post or are you wanting to run the Flickr widget so that the students can see the Flickr images in a sidebar or similar?
December 21, 2007 at 4:24 am Permalink
Some of my students have submitted a post but then it doesn’t show up… not even with the refresh button. What’s happening to the comments? I have watched my students type and submit responses to blogs and sometimes, for no apperant reason, they do not post. It seems to happen approximately 50% of the time. When the computer does provide a comment it says it looks like a duplicate- even though the 1st response does not show up… Help…
Thanks : )
December 21, 2007 at 4:27 am Permalink
Another question… how to you archive old items??? I’m also interested in knowing how blog websites are nominated each year?
Thanks : )
December 21, 2007 at 5:52 am Permalink
I want to post a set of Flickr pics on my blog site. I can run the Flickr widget on the sidebar, no problem but the students want to see their pics, is that possible?
