I’ve installed two plugins for whopping spam that you can turn on through your ‘Plugins’ menu.
They are ‘auto-close comments’ and ‘auto-close trackbacks’ and will automatically close comments and trackbacks on all posts over 21 days in age… I use it myself at incorporated subversion and it’ll cut comment spam by 90%… promise!

Good to hear its not just me thats been plagued by spam this week. I had noticed those earlier today when I was looking for a plugin to add one of those “type the following characters” thingies. Is there any info on what proportion of comments you miss by closing off old posts?
In my experience almost none… comments just don’t happen after 21 days unless you’re a software developer and you;re using the comments to support a particular product. Also, I’ve usually moved on by then…
I’m still hearing from users that the blog will not allow them to post. I wish I knew the spamers’ secrets. They seem to post like crazy, and the people who need to use the blog can’t. I just heard from another user about this today.
