Little grey bar & search edublogs function

You might have noticed that after a rather large pile of consideration about how I could best advertise edublogs.org through each edublog… I ended up with the only really feasible option being the little grey bar you’ll now find at the top of your blog. I’ve tried to keep it as innocuous as possible and am very keen on feedback as to how I can make it as low on the annoying stakes as I can so but what with my realtively simple design skills I’m very up for feedback, so fire away!

The other options (badges, link manager stuff, sidebars) all turned out too painful and inflexible in the end and I really do want to (and see the need to) grow edublogs.org to get support and make good things happen and this is one of the best ways I can think of doing it. Let me know if it messes up your theme too much and I’ll see what I can do.

On a brighter note, you can now simply search the whole of edublogs.org using the google search facility in the sidebar… so happy surfing and re-finding those posts you can only remember 2 words from :)

The Edublog Awards 2005!!!

Josie has been kind enough to take over the edublog awards this year and has gone into overdrive with the nominations, these are the categories:

* Most innovative edublogging project, service or programme
* Best newcomer
* Most influential post, resource or presentation
* Best designed/most beautiful edublog
* Best library/librarian blog
* Best teacher blog
* Best audio and/or visual blog
* Best example/ case study of use of weblogs within teaching and learning
* Best group blog
* Best individual blog

There will also be a Best of the Best award, which will be open to all winners of the 2005 Edublog Award Categories.

Nominations are not to be public this year, you’ve got to be an edublogger (in the first place, so be sure to include your edublogs.org url when you nominate) and you’ve got to email: 2005awards@googlemail.com … so get cracking, you’ve not got long.

You can find out more about the nominations process here and if there ‘aint a heck of a lot of edublogs.org blogs up for best newcomer then I’ll come after y’all with a mallet :D

One existing and some more upcoming features

Did you know that you can blog to edublogs.org using your phone, mobile device or third party application of your choice! All you need to do is to know your username and password and point it towards: http://yourblogid.edublogs.org/wordpress/xmlrpc.php (big thanks to Paulo on this one!)

Here are a few features that I want to get working in the very near future:

Google Analytics Stats – by the time google gets this working on an ongoing basis you’ll be able to get your stats through it. You will need a gmail account though so email jamesnfarmer@gmail.com if you don’t already have one and I’ll invite you.

Invites – I’m really keen to introduce the ‘invite’ function as while you don’t need an invite to use edublogs, there’s something special about getting one ‘aint there :)

Uploading documents – Currently upload is only for images, I’m gonna change this so that you can upload documents to your hearts content too!

Login from the front page – This one might be a bit more ambitious but I’d love for people to be able to login from this front page… it’s on the list!

As for editing themes I’m afraid that there doesn’t seem to be much on the horizon on that front.. although you can use the Links tool to insert images, javascripts and more into your sidebar… hopefully, down the line, sometime, this might happen.

In the meantime… what else would you like? Let me know!

Images back!

I *think* that images are now uploading & dragging and dropping just fine, let me know how it works for you.

Need to find some more MB now too…. hmmmmmm!

Features

edublogs.org provides free, fully functional WordPress blogs hosted on our dedicated top-of-the range server. With these you can create individual posts in a traditional blog-style, pages of static content indexed in your sidebar and select from any number of themes to give life to your new blog.

wpex3.gif In addition to this you can upload up to 25MB of images, audio, documents, powerpoints or other digital material you want to share. Posting these is as simple as dragging and dropping them to your posting window.

And of course you can link to or bring in any larger audio or image files that you uplaod anywhere else on the web, such as ourmedia.org – so you can have that 20 MB podcast up and running in no time :)
wpex4.gifThematically you’ve got an awful lot of choices too. Currently we offer over 60 different (and rather cool) themes at edublogs.org and we’re adding more all the time. What’s more, many of these themes will allow you to edit the header, decide which pieces of content you want in your sidebar and generally rock your world.

And that’s not all, there’s a comprehensive (the most comprehensive) link manager, complete control over comments, choices about the number of posts to display on your front page and in your feed, profiles, plugins to fix you up with tools like Google Analytics to get your web stats, multi-user and group blogging simply done through the use of the ‘Users’ area and plenty plenty more besides!

So what are you waiting for, create your new edublog now and get posting!
